There are two types of fox species in Rhode Island, the red and gray. Gray fox weigh around 6 to 15 pounds, with the smaller red fox coming in at 6 to 13 pounds. Much less is known about the gray fox than the red. Foxes have a range no larger than 5 miles in diameter. They are solitary predators active mostly at dawn to dusk.
Both species of fox can carry the rabies disease. They are also prone to mange and canine distemper.
